How To Find a Good Photographer
As a model, you’ll need someone to take some eye-catching photos of you to put on your comp card. Even though you don’t need to spend a lot of money on a photographer, you don’t want to go the cheap route either.
The first thing an aspiring model should do is call ad agencies and ask the creative director what photographers they use for ads. If they’re happy with the person’s work, they’ll gladly make a recommendation to you. The same thing goes for talent agencies. They know plenty of people who shoot for a living and can tell you who’s good and who’s not.
Credible agencies should recommend a few photographers. Anyone saying they only work with one photographer in particular should be avoided as they probably get a kickback from the referral.
One could also attend their local theater and ask the actors performing which person they used for their shots. If they’re working, they have photographers who took good pictures of them that eventually helped in obtaining them work.
If you’re completely broke, you can always call the local college and ask to speak to the photography instructors to see if they have any talented students willing to take headshots for free. Some will be more than happy to oblige so they can build up their portfolio.
You might even find the same deal at camera shops that have assistant photographers working there. Like the students, they need to build up their portfolio too and usually services can simply be exchanged.
When you knock on a photographer’s door or go to their web site, make sure to look closely at the photographer’s work. What you’re looking for are photos that are in focus, look interesting, and catch your eye.
Lastly, a model should stick with Polaroids if they’re just trying to get an agent. Most agents want to see the model with all her imperfections so most of them don’t want models who take expensive pictures with all their makeup on.
